Bay window storage, cute and functional
Bay window storage build. Remember when I mentioned that I wanted to have more storage in my kitchen? Well if you missed it you can read all about my kitchen renovation here. If you want the quick version, it was one of the biggest reasons I started renovating my kitchen. Anyways, moving on since I’m not the slightest bit bitter that my ceiling weren’t tall enough.
Now that my farm table was built click here if you missed it. I needed that last bit of seating to complete my new table set up. I had the perfect space under my bay windows in the breakfast nook. This was going to work great for storage, I could use a pop of color, and two kids could sit comfortably at the table on one side as opposed to only having one chair.
Lets get started
OK, so small confession, these pictures were pre-blog also, but good news…I will walk you through how it was built. And at least there are some pictures so that you can get a visual.
- First start with framing out your area with 2x4s
- Next, enclosed the front with 1/2 plywood
- Then, enclosed the top with 3/4 MDF
- Make sure sure to cut top section to allow for door after you have dry fitted it in the area
- Add the piano hinge to the top
- Drill a 1” hole so that you can open and close.
- Finally, trim the front face out with 1x4s, or whatever you choose
- Paint
Your almost finished! Now we need to make the seating area.
- We used the other half of the 3/4” MDF (do not attach, this is what you will remove to get to the storage below).
- Cover the MDF seating with foam and batting. I glued the 1” foam on top of the MDF, then added batting over the top of the foam to about 1-2” under the MDF and stapled.
- Pick your poison (material). My choice was to go bold, something that had a lot of darkness so that it would help hide the mess my kids made.
- Now step back and be amazed at what you accomplished. If you ever get tired of the material, just change it out, simple fix!
