Everything with a purpose
How I made my farm table legs out of old columns.
Everyone always ask me where I got my farm table from because they love the chunky legs. Now if you know me, I love to find new life for old things. Rethink and reimagine and your trash to treasure comes to life. While looking on craigslist one day, I ran across a post with a bunch of old apartment porch columns for sale. They were stacked up and you could barley tell they were white with all the dust that had settled over the years. So of course I did the obvious, messaged the person on craigslist to see if they were still available, then told my husband “hey hunny, I’m going to take a quick trip to look at something, wanna go”. Can you hear him say “what now” lol, God love him.
P.S. here is a tip for you ladies. If you would have shown the post to your spouse first and asked their opinion, would you have even made it out the front door? Nope. And what would you have said if you were asked…..what in the world is that, and what are you going to do with it? My answer would have been… I have no idea, but I like it, and its going to be beautiful…once I think of it. If you ask for forgiveness afterwards you now have someone going with you, because you DON’T EVER GO ALONE!
Traveling Conversation
So back in the truck, going to meet this gentleman that had tons of columns. I get asked the question! What are you building now? Hmmmm, (here’s my go to answer, and hunny if your reading this, I’m just helping others follow there trash to treasure dreams). I’m really not sure, but aren’t they awesome, you just cant find quality like you use to (mind you, I haven’t seen them yet) and the price, you just can’t beat it, and hunny you know I’m creative, so when I figure out what I’m going to do with the columns you’ll be the first to know. I’m so thankful my husband has a good sense of humor or either he just loves me.
Destination Arrival
Arriving to look at the columns, they were way back in an old shed (see always have someone with you). There must have been 60 plus columns just sitting there. The gentleman said during our small conversation he just wanted them gone because they were taking up space in his wood shop and he would take $10 each, he also mentioned that he had been trying to get rid of them for months now. He ask, what are you going to do with them? As I pondered on what I wanted to do with them, I had a light bulb moment. Farm table legs! So, I told my husband, lets buy them all. Of course, Garrick gave me the look. So sadly I settled with four, but I told the gentleman, I would be back. Well apparently the gentleman that sold me the columns thought it was a great idea to make farm tables because by the time I got home the post on craigslist had been removed. Me and my big mouth. Oh and you better believe I gave my husband the..I told you so.
Columns to table legs
So forgive me I don’t have pictures. This is all pre-blog, but here is one while my husband was almost finished with it.
I must say, my husband and I make a really good team. He builds anything I dream up and does a fantastic job at anything that shows craftsmanship.
Now a little paint and stain and wallah.
Funny how one idea, can spur the next. With this table I only wanted three chairs around it, because my idea was to have a built in bench under my bay window. More here on that story.
